A variation of clear quartz which comes in an almost limitless variety from very pale smoke to jet black. Often contains beautiful rainbows in the planes inside the crystal. It is formed when clear quartz is exposed to natural radiation during its growing phase. You should be aware that some unscrupulous producers irradiate clear quartz to produce smokey! This can be reasonably easily detected as the colour is even throughout the piece without the natural variations.
